Los Angeles, CA – Grammy-winning singer Sam Smith has opened up about their experiences with body image struggles and the cosmetic surgery they underwent as a teenager. In a candid conversation on the “Podcrushed” podcast, Smith revealed they had liposuction at age 13 due to relentless bullying about their weight and developing chest.
“My weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school,” Smith told host Penn Badgley, explaining that the teasing led to them getting liposuction on their chest to alleviate the distress. “I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell.”
While Smith’s parents were supportive of the decision, seeing how deeply the bullying affected them, the “Unholy” singer admitted that the procedure was ultimately a “nightmare” and ineffective in the long run. They attributed this to continuing poor eating habits. The singer also admitted to manipulating the post-surgery bandage to get preferential treatment in the lunch line, ultimately leading to more overeating.
Despite the challenges, Smith has come a long way in their journey toward self-acceptance. They told The Sunday Times in 2023 that they’ve finally reached a point where they feel comfortable in their own skin. Recalling forcing themself to go topless at the pool, Smith stated, “It paid off because I now have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fabulous.” Smith shared that they are now liberated from the pressures they felt when they were younger and are using music as an outlet for self-expression.
