Audible Unveils Star-Studded, Immersive ‘Harry Potter’ Audiobooks

NEW YORK – Audible has launched a brand new, full-cast audiobook adaptation of the Harry Potter series, promising an immersive listening experience unlike any other. Featuring a star-studded voice cast of over 200 actors, including Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Hugh Laurie, and Kit Harington, alongside a 60-piece orchestra and state-of-the-art sound design, the project aims to bring the wizarding world to life in a completely new way.

The first book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” was released on November 4th, with subsequent installments planned for release over the next six months.

“The question was, how do we take this beloved series, which has been performed so well, and do something fresh and new?” said Rachel Ghiazza, Audible’s chief content officer.

The production team went to great lengths to create authentic sound effects, using materials like celery wrapped in suede to mimic the sound of Dementors and rubbing potatoes on gravel for the slimy hands of creatures. Dolby Atmos technology was used to create an immersive soundscape that places listeners directly within the story.

The release comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling’s views on the transgender community. Audible acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue but emphasized the series’ core themes of friendship and courage.

Despite the controversy, actors involved are excited about the project. Hugh Laurie, voicing Albus Dumbledore, recognizes the legacy of previous portrayals and aims to honor the character. Kit Harington, voicing Gilderoy Lockhart, shared his personal connection to the audiobooks and his excitement about eventually sharing the stories with his children.

Audible emphasizes that the new audiobooks are intended to complement the existing, popular narrations by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, offering listeners a fresh and engaging way to experience the magic of Harry Potter.
