Thoothukudi Mayor Urges Swift Action to Combat Mosquito Menace Ahead of Monsoon
THOOTHUKUDI, India – November 3, 2025 – Thoothukudi Mayor N.P. Jegan Periyasamy has called for an acceleration of mosquito eradication efforts within the city, citing a surge in citizen complaints and concerns over potential disease outbreaks ahead of the impending northeast monsoon.
During a review meeting held Monday, Mayor Jegan expressed dissatisfaction with the current pace of mosquito control, stating that only 50% of the problem has been addressed despite ongoing measures such as the deployment of oil balls and anti-mosquito chemicals. He emphasized the need to expand operations to previously uncovered areas, utilizing both vehicle-mounted and handheld fumigation equipment.
“I am being flooded with complaints,” Mayor Jegan stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation. The recent showers have created stagnant water in vacant private plots, particularly in wards 2, 16, and 17, which were addressed immediately
The Corporation has deployed approximately 250 anti-dengue workers to inspect homes and construction sites for potential mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, steps are being taken to manage plastic waste from marriage halls, and scrap yards have been instructed to promptly remove waste materials.
While assuring the public that no dengue cases have been reported within the Thoothukudi Corporation limits, Mayor Jegan urged health officials to intensify their efforts to prevent any future outbreak of vector-borne diseases.
Corporation Commissioner C. Priyanka, City Health Officer Saroja, and other sanitary department officials were present at the meeting.
