Grand Egyptian Museum Set to Open, Ushering in a New Era for Egyptian Tourism

Cairo, Egypt – October 30, 2025 – After two decades of anticipation, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is finally set to open its doors to the public on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Located near the Giza Pyramids, this ₹1 billion (USD 12M) mega-project aims to revitalize Egypt’s tourism industry and showcase the nation’s rich ancient civilization.

The GEM, poised to be the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, will house over 50,000 artifacts, providing a comprehensive look into life in ancient Egypt. The museum is one of the mega-projects championed by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi to revive an economy weakened by political unrest following the 2011 Arab Spring uprising.

Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum’s architecture features a stunning triangular glass façade inspired by the nearby pyramids. Visitors will be greeted by the granite colossus of Ramesses the Great in the entrance atrium. The main galleries will feature artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the Roman era, displayed with advanced technology and multimedia presentations to engage modern audiences.

A highlight of the GEM will be the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s artifacts, displayed in its entirety for the first time since Howard Carter’s discovery in 1922. Masterpieces like King Khufu’s 4,600-year-old solar boat will also be on display.

The Egyptian government hopes the GEM will attract a surge of tourists, contributing to the country’s economic growth. Tourism suffered in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring and the recent conflict in West Asia, which contributed to the delay. Recent upgrades to roads, the construction of a metro station, and the opening of Sphinx International Airport aim to improve access to the museum.

Hassan Allam, CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, the firm operating the museum, expects 15,000-20,000 visitors daily. “The world has been waiting… Everyone’s excited,” Allam stated. World leaders are expected to attend the opening ceremony on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
