Zimbabwe Dominate Day 1, Take Lead Over Afghanistan in Test Match
HARARE – Zimbabwe ended Day 1 of their Test match against Afghanistan in a commanding position, reaching a score of 128/2 and taking a narrow lead of 1 run after dismissing Afghanistan for 127. Play was called early due to fading light at 17:06 local time (15:06 GMT, 20:36 IST).
After winning the toss, Zimbabwe initially struggled, but quickly found their rhythm as the Afghan batting lineup collapsed. Afghanistan, at one point looking comfortable at 77/1, lost wickets in quick succession. Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored for the visitors with 37. The Zimbabwean bowlers were relentless, exploiting loose shots and dominating the Afghan batsmen.
Brad Evans was the standout performer with the ball, claiming an impressive five-wicket haul in only his second Test match (first since 2023), adding a new feather in his cap.
In response, Zimbabwe’s batsmen displayed patience and control. While Brian Bennett was dismissed early, a solid 97-run partnership between Ben Curran and Nick Welch stabilized the innings. Curran reached his second Test half-century before stumps, while Welch fell just short of his own, dismissed for 49. Brendan Taylor also started positively, contributing to Zimbabwe taking the lead.
Looking ahead to Day 2, Zimbabwe will aim to capitalize on the favorable batting conditions and build a substantial lead. Afghanistan faces a daunting task, needing to bowl with discipline and restrict Zimbabwe to as small a lead as possible.
Play is scheduled to resume at 10:00 am local time.
