**Mexico Flooding Death Toll Climbs to 64, Dozens Still Missing**
**MEXICO CITY** – The death toll from last week’s devastating torrential rains in Mexico has risen to 64, with rescue efforts intensifying to reach communities still isolated by the floods. Days of relentless rainfall transformed streets into raging rivers, collapsing roads and bridges, and triggering deadly landslides across central and eastern Mexico.
Authorities report 65 people remain missing. The hardest-hit states include Veracruz, where 29 deaths have been confirmed, Hidalgo with 21 deaths, and Puebla with at least 13. A child was also killed in a landslide in Queretaro.
An estimated 10,000 troops and civilian rescue teams have been deployed to address the ongoing emergency. Helicopters are being used to deliver crucial food and water supplies to approximately 200 communities cut off by road closures and to evacuate the sick and injured.
“There are sufficient resources; this won’t be skimped on… because we’re still in the emergency period,” stated President Claudia Sheinbaum during a press briefing, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing aid.
Parts of Veracruz state received a staggering 62.7cm (24.7in) of rain between October 6th and 9th, exacerbating the already dire situation. Officials acknowledge that it could take days to re-establish access to some of the most isolated areas.
Mexico’s Civil Protection agency has attributed the extreme weather to the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Storm Raymond, both of which have since dissipated after forming off the country’s western coast. The focus remains on rescue and relief efforts as authorities work to assess the full extent of the damage and assist affected communities.
