**”Bill & Ted” Stars Reunite on Broadway in “Waiting for Godot” Revival**
NEW YORK, NY – Jamie Lloyd’s minimalist Broadway revival of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” has officially opened at the Hudson Theater, featuring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, best known as the iconic duo from the “Bill & Ted” film series. The production, which opened Sunday night, casts the former time-traveling teens as the existential clowns Vladimir (Winter) and Estragon (Reeves) in a visually striking, though somewhat subdued, rendition of the classic tragicomedy.
The production takes liberties, most notably with the spontaneous addition of air guitar by Reeves and Winter, a nod to their “Bill & Ted” personas that is sure to polarize audiences. Lloyd’s interpretation also features a minimalist set design, foregoing the traditional tree and country road for a stark, tunnel-like structure.
While the casting stunt has drawn significant attention, early reviews suggest the performances of Reeves and Winter are still developing. Critics noted a tentativeness and lack of weight in their delivery, particularly in the first act, though glimpses of physical comedy and vaudeville business in Act II offer promise.
Brandon J. Dirden as Pozzo and Michael Patrick Thornton as Lucky have been hailed as standouts, injecting much-needed energy and depth into the production.
“Waiting for Godot” runs through January 4 at the Hudson Theater.
