**INDIANAPOLIS, IN** – Former NBA player Scot Pollard, 50, is thriving a year after receiving a life-saving heart transplant, an experience that has forged an unexpected bond with the family of his donor, Casey Angell. Pollard, who played 11 seasons in the NBA, had been battling genetic heart disease and was in end-stage heart failure when he received Angell’s heart on February 16, 2024.

Prior to the transplant, Pollard’s health had rapidly deteriorated. After receiving a flu shot, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart muscle, resulting in his need for transplant.

Following the procedure, Pollard wrote a letter to the donor family, expressing his gratitude and desire to connect. After some time, the Angell family responded. Pamela Angell, Casey’s wife, and Megan Tyra, Casey’s sister, explained that Casey had a “big heart” both figuratively and literally. Casey, 45, had passed away due to complications from pneumonia, prompting Pamela and Megan to donate his heart.

The families met in person in Texas earlier this year and have since formed a close relationship. Pollard even invited the Angell family to join him as grand marshals of the Indy 500 Festival Parade.

The heart transplant has not only given Pollard a second chance at life but also allowed him to be present for his family, including his son Ozzy, who is now a college freshman, and his daughter Icean. Pollard and Dawn, his wife, remain keenly aware of the expense of their joy, however, and hope to continue to honor Casey’s memory.

Pollard’s experience has also raised awareness about the importance of organ donation.
