Fri Jun 13 09:30:00 UTC 2025: **’How to Train Your Dragon’ Director Reflects on Live-Action Adaptation, Addresses ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Remake**

Hollywood, CA – Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the beloved “How to Train Your Dragon” animated trilogy, is embarking on a new adventure: directing a live-action adaptation of his own work. The film, set to release on June 13th, promises to honor the original while expanding the story with 27 minutes of new material, deepened character relationships, and enhanced action sequences.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois revealed his initial surprise at being offered the project, especially considering Universal’s approach. “The big difference is that Universal approached me as the original filmmaker, which is something that I don’t think any of the Disney remakes have done,” DeBlois stated. Driven by a desire to protect his vision, he eagerly took on the challenge.

DeBlois was also candid about his awareness of the challenges faced by animation directors transitioning to live-action. “I was hyper aware of the long list of animation directors who’ve attempted live-action and failed at it, and I didn’t want to be another one of those,” he admitted, noting his extensive preparation and reliance on veteran talent like cinematographer Bill Pope.

The live-action film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup and features Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast. DeBlois dedicated the film to Butler’s late mother, Margaret Coll, in a touching gesture.

Interestingly, the release of “How to Train Your Dragon” will follow closely on the heels of Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake, a film DeBlois co-wrote and co-directed in its original animated form, but is not involved with.

Looking ahead, DeBlois is open to directing further installments in the “How to Train Your Dragon” live-action series, viewing it as an opportunity to explore deeper themes and character development.
