**New Delhi – June 1, 2025** – India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections continued their upward trend in May, exceeding ₹2.01 lakh crore, according to government data released Sunday. This represents a robust 16.4% increase compared to May 2024’s ₹1.73 lakh crore.
While slightly lower than the record-breaking ₹2.37 lakh crore collected in April, the May figures demonstrate continued economic momentum. Domestic transactions contributed significantly, generating approximately ₹1.50 lakh crore, a 13.7% increase. GST revenue from imports showed even stronger growth, surging 25.2% to ₹51,266 crore.
The breakdown of the gross GST revenues reveals Central GST at ₹35,434 crore, State GST at ₹43,902 crore, Integrated GST at ₹1.09 lakh crore, and Cess revenues at ₹12,879 crore. Total refunds for the month amounted to ₹27,210 crore, a 4% decrease year-on-year. Net GST mop-up for May stood at approximately ₹1.74 lakh crore, marking a 20.4% year-on-year growth.
However, experts caution against a uniform interpretation of the growth across states. M S Mani, Partner at Deloitte India, highlighted significant variations in GST collection growth among different states. While Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu reported substantial increases ranging from 17% to 25%, other large states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana experienced more moderate growth of up to 6%.
“Hence, the average growth across the country does not appear to be uniformly reflected across States, possibly due to sectoral or seasonal factors which require a deeper data based analysis,” Mr. Mani stated, emphasizing the need for a granular understanding of the contributing factors behind these regional disparities.
The strong GST collection data suggests a positive trajectory for the Indian economy, but experts advocate for closer examination to identify and address the underlying dynamics driving growth at the state level.
