Tue May 20 23:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Red Sox Rookie Campbell’s First Base Debut on Hold Due to Learning Curve
**BOSTON, MA** – Red Sox infielder Kristian Campbell’s highly anticipated debut at first base will be delayed as the team focuses on his development and injury prevention. Manager Alex Cora confirmed that Campbell, who has been working on learning the position, will not see game action at first during the current homestand.
Cora emphasized the need for caution as Campbell adjusts to the physical demands of a new position at the major league level. “He was a little bit tight on Sunday. So we have to be careful. We don’t want to lose him just because he’s learning a new position,” Cora stated, highlighting the team’s commitment to his long-term health.
First base coach Jose Flores is focusing on Campbell’s agility and safety around the bag. Cora acknowledged Campbell is still early in the learning process, estimating his current progress as a “two and a half, three” on a scale of 10. The team aims to progress him toward a 10 while prioritizing safety.
In the meantime, the Red Sox will continue to utilize Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro at first base. Romy Gonzalez, currently on the IL, is also expected to be an option upon his return later this week. With several options available, the Red Sox are taking a patient approach to Campbell’s positional transition, prioritizing his development and well-being over a rushed debut. The Red Sox will then embark on a six-game road trip to Milwaukee and Atlanta.
