Wed May 21 01:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Scorches Under Apparent Temperature of 50°C Despite Actual 42°C Reading
**New Delhi, India** – Delhi residents are enduring a scorching heatwave, with the “feels like” temperature reaching a staggering 50 degrees Celsius, despite the official maximum temperature hovering around 42 degrees Celsius. The extreme discomfort is attributed to high humidity levels, making the air feel significantly hotter than the thermometer indicates.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Tuesday saw areas of Delhi experiencing a heat index of 49.6 degrees Celsius. High humidity levels, reaching 43% at the Safdarjung station on Tuesday evening, traps moisture in the air, preventing sweat from evaporating and hindering the body’s natural cooling mechanism.
“When humidity is high, the air becomes saturated with moisture, making it harder for sweat to evaporate,” explained an IMD spokesperson. “This creates a sensation of much greater heat, as the body struggles to regulate its temperature.”
The IMD attributes the unseasonably high humidity to a cyclonic system over the Arabian Sea and the influence of a Western Disturbance. While Western Disturbances typically bring rain and cooler temperatures, the current system is drawing moisture inland, exacerbating the already oppressive heat.
Relief may be on the horizon. The IMD forecasts a slight dip in temperatures starting May 22nd, with a possibility of rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday. The predicted maximum temperature for Wednesday is 39 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 29 degrees Celsius.
While the forecast offers a glimmer of hope, the monsoon season is not expected to arrive in Delhi until June, meaning residents will likely face continued heat and humidity in the coming weeks. The IMD advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak hours, and seek shelter in cool environments to mitigate the effects of the extreme heat.
