Tue May 20 08:26:07 UTC 2025: ## HHS Cuts $60 Million in Funding to Harvard Amid Anti-Semitism Row
**Washington D.C. -** The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Monday it is terminating $60 million in federal grants to Harvard University, citing the institution’s alleged failure to adequately address anti-Semitism and race discrimination on campus.
The move is the latest escalation in an ongoing dispute between the Trump administration and the Ivy League school, which has already seen over $2.2 billion in federal funding frozen.
“Due to Harvard University’s continued failure to address anti-Semitic harassment and race discrimination, HHS is terminating multiple multi-year grant awards – totalling approximately $60 million over their full duration,” the department stated in a post on X. The HHS emphasized that discrimination “will not be tolerated” and that federal funds should support institutions that protect all students.
Earlier this month, Education Department Secretary Linda McMahon announced Harvard would no longer receive public funding for research, accusing the university of making a “mockery” of higher education.
Harvard has responded to the funding freeze with a lawsuit, alleging the administration is violating the First Amendment and federal law. President Alan Garber announced last week that the university will use $250 million of its own funds to support research.
The conflict between President Trump and Harvard began in March, with the administration seeking to impose stricter rules on universities hosting pro-Palestinian protests, which Trump has labeled as “illegal” and anti-Semitic. Student protest leaders have defended their actions as a peaceful response to the war in Gaza.
In April, the administration announced the initial funding freeze after Harvard rejected demands to revamp its disciplinary system, eliminate diversity initiatives, and agree to an external audit of programs deemed anti-Semitic by the administration.
Trump and conservative figures have long accused Harvard and other universities of promoting left-wing ideologies and suppressing right-wing viewpoints.
