Mon May 19 10:24:21 UTC 2025: **Trump Claims He and Putin Can End Ukraine War, Awaits Crucial Call**
Washington D.C. – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that he, and only Russian President Vladimir Putin, hold the key to brokering a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump announced a phone call with Putin scheduled for Monday to discuss ending the conflict, a day after talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Turkiye yielded no breakthrough.
“THE SUBJECTS OF THE CALL WILL BE, STOPPING THE ‘BLOODBATH’ THAT IS KILLING, ON AVERAGE, MORE THAN 5000 RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS A WEEK, AND TRADE,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform, promising a ceasefire and an end to the “very violent war.” He also intends to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO members.
The call comes amidst skepticism from Ukrainian officials, who criticized the low-level Russian delegation at the Turkiye talks for lacking the authority to make binding decisions. Zelenskyy has also repeatedly stressed the need for long-term US support and called for an unconditional, 30-day ceasefire. Russia, however, fears Ukraine will use such a pause to rearm.
European leaders, including those from the UK, France, Germany, and Italy, have voiced their support for Trump’s proposed 30-day ceasefire and urged Putin to accept it. The talks also occur as Russia launched its largest drone attack in recent months, killing at least one civilian and causing broad damage.
Experts suggest that Putin will likely present a list of conditions for a ceasefire, and that the USA are the only country which could end the war.
