**Virudhunagar Farmers Denied Crop Insurance Due to Negligence of Village Officials**
*Virudhunagar, May 19, 2025* – Farmers in Kariyapatti, Narikudi, and Tiruchuli unions of Virudhunagar Taluk are facing financial hardship due to the negligent practices of Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) in recording banana cultivation. The lack of accurate enumeration is resulting in the denial of crucial crop insurance, leaving farmers vulnerable to significant losses from natural calamities.
According to the Cauvery Vaigai Kiruthumal Gundar Irrigation Farmers Federation, insurance companies are rejecting claims because official records fail to reflect the minimum acreage requirement (50 acres) for banana cultivation within a union. R. Rampandian, district president of the federation, stated that the VAOs are failing to take the enumeration work seriously and thus don’t record the area.
“The VAOs feel that farmers are not regular in cultivation of bananas,” said Mr. Ram Pandian. “Hence, if once recorded in the crop cultivation register of the village, they would have to give details of every variety of crop and so they refrain from registering the coverage of banana.”
This oversight has had devastating consequences for farmers, such as one in Vadapalai who lost a significant number of banana trees to a recent lightning strike and was unable to receive compensation. Farmers invest between ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 per acre in banana cultivation, and without insurance, they are left with minimal general compensation that doesn’t adequately cover their losses.
The farmers’ federation is urging government officials to instruct the VAOs on the importance of accurate crop enumeration, emphasizing that it is crucial for the banana farmers in Tiruchuli, Narikudi, and Kariyapatti blocks to access vital crop insurance and protect their livelihoods.
