**Chennai, Tamil Nadu, May 13, 2025** – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin led a large solidarity rally in Chennai on Saturday, showcasing his unwavering support for the Indian armed forces following Operation Sindoor in Pakistan. The rally, which saw Mr. Stalin carrying the Indian flag, comes amid long-standing accusations against his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party of being “secessionist.”

The rally, timed to coincide with a ceasefire following the military operation, served as a powerful counter to these criticisms. Mr. Stalin’s public display of patriotism, exceeding even that of BJP Chief Ministers, aimed to dispel the persistent label that has dogged the DMK despite its past participation in national governments and its abandonment of demands for a separate Dravidian state.

Critics have frequently used the “secessionist” label to attack the DMK’s advocacy for state autonomy and stronger federalism. Recent instances, such as the state government’s replacement of the Indian rupee symbol with a Tamil alphabet in budget documents, have fueled these accusations. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman condemned this move as promoting secessionist sentiments.

However, Mr. Stalin defended the decision as an assertion of Tamil Nadu’s language policy, highlighting the often-contrasting narratives surrounding the promotion of Hindi as national integration versus Tamil Nadu’s opposition to Hindi imposition being labeled as “chauvinism.”

The DMK’s past actions, including the formation of committees to study Centre-State relations, have also been misinterpreted as secessionist leanings. The party’s opposition to policies like the National Education Policy and the PM SHRI scheme has further fueled these accusations.

Despite his strained relationship with the Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi praised the rally, emphasizing the strong support shown by the state’s citizens for the armed forces. Mr. Stalin’s rally represents a calculated strategic move by the DMK to firmly counter accusations of disloyalty to the nation.
