Mon May 12 13:40:18 UTC 2025: ## Safety Concerns Raised After Electrical Failures at Newly Built Kozhikode Hospital
**Kozhikode, May 12, 2025** – A public sector company, HLL Infratech Services Ltd. (HLL-HITES), is investigating safety concerns at the newly constructed Surgical Super-speciality, Accident and Emergency Care Block of the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, following two recent suspected electrical failures.
The seven-story building, opened in March 2023, was constructed with ₹195.93 crore in funding from the central and state governments under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Allegations of construction lapses have surfaced, including claims that a Building Management System (BMS) intended to monitor safety features was not fully operational, with only CCTV cameras connected. Further allegations include substandard electrical wiring, construction faults, and issues with installed equipment, reportedly highlighted by the Public Works Department and the Directorate of Medical Education. Prior to the inauguration, water leakage and a false ceiling collapse were also reported.
While HLL-HITES, the project consultant, denies these claims, stating the building received all necessary approvals and the BMS was functional during the recent incidents, a report on the building’s safety is being prepared and will be shared with the college principal and district administration. A team from HLL-HITES recently visited the hospital to discuss the matter with authorities. The investigation is ongoing.
