**NEW DELHI –** Indian Railways is implementing stricter rules effective May 1st to improve the travel experience for passengers with confirmed tickets. Under the new policy, passengers holding waiting list tickets will no longer be permitted to travel in sleeper or AC coaches, and will be restricted to general compartments only.
Currently, while online waiting list tickets are automatically cancelled, many passengers purchasing tickets at counters occupy seats in higher classes despite their waiting list status. This practice will now be prohibited. Train Ticket Examiners (TTEs) will have the authority to fine or relocate any waiting list passenger found in sleeper or AC coaches.
According to Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, the change aims to alleviate discomfort for passengers with confirmed tickets who are often displaced by those with waiting list tickets. Overcrowding caused by waiting list passengers in sleeper and AC coaches also disrupts passenger movement and overall comfort, the railway explained.
Passengers who frequently travel with waiting list tickets are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and be prepared to travel in general compartments.
