**New Delhi, May 1, 2025** – India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection surged to a record high of ₹2.37 lakh crore (approximately $28.7 billion USD) in April 2025, marking a 12.6% year-on-year increase. This signifies robust economic activity and reflects the completion of March-end book reconciliations by businesses, according to government data released Thursday.
The previous highest GST collection was ₹2.10 lakh crore in April 2024. Domestic transactions contributed ₹1.9 lakh crore (a 10.7% rise), while revenue from imported goods jumped 20.8% to ₹46,913 crore. Even after accounting for a 48.3% increase in refunds issued (reaching ₹27,341 crore), the net GST collection still showed a healthy 9.1% growth, exceeding ₹2.09 lakh crore.
Experts attribute the record figures to strong economic performance in the final month of the previous fiscal year. Deloitte India Partner M.S. Mani highlighted the consistent high GST collections across major states as evidence of this strength. EY Tax Partner Saurabh Agarwal emphasized the resilience of the Indian economy amidst global uncertainties, citing government initiatives to expedite refunds as a contributing factor. Abhishek Jain, KPMG’s Indirect Tax Head & Partner, noted the role of year-end reconciliation in boosting the figures, while acknowledging the underlying economic growth.
While a slight dip in GST collections is anticipated in May due to global economic conditions, the overall outlook for the Indian economy remains positive, according to analysts.
