Sat Apr 19 15:50:28 UTC 2025: ## Kochi Metro Construction Causes Chaos on Civil Line Road

**KOCHI, Kerala – April 19, 2025** – The ongoing construction of the Kochi Metro’s Kakkanad extension is causing significant disruption and safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians on Civil Line Road. The narrow, potholed, and uneven carriageway, narrowed by barricades erected six months ago, has led to numerous accidents, including a fatal incident on April 16th where a woman on a two-wheeler was killed.

The poor road conditions are causing widespread frustration. M.S. Anilkumar of the Thrikkakara Development Forum (TDF) criticizes the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) for its lack of concern, noting that piling work within many barricaded areas has yet to begin. Motorists have no alternative routes, and the lack of redevelopment of parallel roads exacerbates the issue. The planned modifications to the Collectorate Junction further add to the uncertainty.

Thrikkakkara MLA Uma Thomas echoes these concerns, highlighting the stark contrast with the first phase of the metro project, which saw significant road improvements by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). She points to the unscientific drain work causing flooding and the arbitrary shifting of U-turns as further problems. Local businesses are also suffering due to reduced foot traffic and difficulties with deliveries.

While KMRL sources state that the carriageway will be improved once piling accelerates and that additional traffic wardens have been deployed, critics remain unconvinced. The delay in opening the Collectorate Junction-Eachamukku stretch of Seaport-Airport Road, now four years overdue, further underscores the issues plaguing the project. The current situation underscores the need for better planning and coordination to minimize disruption during large-scale infrastructure projects.
