Wed Apr 16 21:13:00 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Launches Unique Business Card Campaign to Tackle Textile Waste

**Bengaluru, April 17, 2025** – A new campaign in Bengaluru is tackling the growing problem of textile waste using a unique approach: business cards made from discarded clothing. BBC Media Action, in partnership with the Saamuhika Shakti collective, launched the “Got Old Clothes?” initiative, aiming to encourage responsible disposal of used garments.

The campaign features business cards crafted from recycled textiles collected by waste picker families at skill development centers. These cards include a WhatsApp number (+91 9741730854) linking users to a chatbot that directs them to the nearest Dry Waste Collection Centers (DWCCs) for drop-offs. For larger quantities (over 50 kg), Hasiru Dala, a partner organization, offers doorstep pickup services.

India generates a staggering 7.2 million tonnes of textile waste annually, with 3.94 million tonnes coming from households, according to Enviu’s report. This contributes significantly to environmental pollution and climate change. The initiative highlights the crucial role of waste pickers, approximately 22,500 in Bengaluru alone, in managing this waste stream. It’s estimated that 60% of discarded textiles have recycling potential if properly collected.

Soma Katiyar, Executive Creator Director of BBC Media Action, India, stated that the campaign aims to shift public perception of waste pickers, recognizing them as vital professionals in the circular economy. The initiative also involves a decentralized collection system operational in 16 Bengaluru wards, moving collected textiles to a Textile Recovery Facility for recycling.

Actor Danish Sait supported the launch, emphasizing the importance of responsible disposal and supporting waste pickers in diverting textiles from landfills. The campaign represents a significant step towards sustainable waste management in Bengaluru and serves as a model for other cities facing similar challenges.
