**New Delhi, April 16, 2025** – India’s trade landscape underwent significant changes in the last fiscal year (2024-25), with the United States retaining its position as India’s largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year, while the trade deficit with China widened significantly.

According to government data released today, bilateral trade between India and the U.S. reached $131.84 billion, with Indian exports to the U.S. surging 11.6% to $86.51 billion. This resulted in a trade surplus of $41.18 billion for India. Key Indian exports to the U.S. included pharmaceuticals, telecom equipment, precious stones, and petroleum products. Imports from the U.S. mainly consisted of crude oil, petroleum products, and diamonds.

In contrast, India’s trade deficit with China ballooned to $99.2 billion, a 17% increase from the previous fiscal year. While imports from China rose by 11.52% to $113.45 billion, exports contracted by 14.5% to $14.25 billion. Despite this widening deficit, China remained India’s second-largest trading partner with a total bilateral trade of $127.7 billion.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) held the third position with $100.5 billion in bilateral trade.

The Commerce Ministry highlighted that the U.S. has been India’s largest trading partner since 2021-22, after China held the top spot for several years. Both nations are currently negotiating a trade agreement aiming to boost bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
