Sun Apr 13 05:00:00 UTC 2025: ## McLaren’s Piastri Takes Pole in Thrilling Bahrain GP Qualifying

**SAKHIR, BAHRAIN** – Oscar Piastri secured a stunning pole position for McLaren at the Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying session, edging out Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a dramatic finish. The Australian’s final lap of 1:29.841s put him just tenths ahead of the competition, capping off a dominant qualifying performance for McLaren.

The session saw several unexpected twists and turns. McLaren controlled much of the early stages, with Piastri and Lando Norris consistently topping the timesheets. However, Norris ultimately finished sixth after a sub-par final Q3 lap, while his teammate secured pole.

Mercedes showed strong pace, with Russell securing second and teammate Kimi Antonelli finishing fourth before receiving a one-place grid penalty. Ferrari’s Leclerc managed third, despite a strong showing.

Red Bull faced challenges. Max Verstappen, hampered by brake issues, struggled throughout qualifying and will start seventh. His teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, managed a respectable tenth after advancing to Q3.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly secured a commendable fifth place, capitalizing on Norris’s final lap struggles. Carlos Sainz delivered a solid performance for Ferrari, qualifying eighth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton (ninth) and Tsunoda.

The session also saw several incidents. Esteban Ocon crashed heavily in Q2, bringing out the red flags. Several drivers faced penalties for track limits violations, notably Hulkenberg, whose penalties moved him down the grid. Alex Albon was an early casualty, exiting in Q1.

Despite some early concerns, Piastri expressed confidence in his car’s performance throughout the weekend, ultimately delivering when it mattered most to secure his first career pole position. The Bahrain Grand Prix is set for Sunday at 1800 local time.
