Sun Apr 13 05:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Piastri Takes Pole in Bahrain as McLaren Dominates Qualifying, but Verstappen Struggles

**SAKHIR, BAHRAIN** – Oscar Piastri secured a stunning pole position for McLaren at the Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying session, but the team’s dominance wasn’t as complete as anticipated. While Piastri delivered a powerful performance, teammate and championship leader Lando Norris could only manage sixth.

George Russell of Mercedes secured a strong second place, closely followed by teammate Kimi Antonelli in fourth and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in third. However, a post-qualifying investigation revealed that both Mercedes cars left the garage too early after a red flag, resulting in one-place grid penalties for Russell and Antonelli.

The qualifying session saw a closer-than-expected battle at the top, with Russell only a tenth and a half behind Piastri. In contrast, reigning champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, currently trailing Norris by just one point in the championship, struggled in the heat, qualifying in a disappointing seventh place. Verstappen expressed frustration with his car’s setup and reported brake issues.

Despite McLaren’s impressive performance, their car still exhibited some instability, particularly in qualifying. However, its race pace and tire management are considered significant advantages. McLaren’s first-ever pole position in Bahrain sets them up for a strong chance at their maiden victory at the circuit.

Piastri expressed confidence in his performance, while Norris admitted to a disappointing qualifying run, leaving him with a challenging race ahead. The Red Bull’s struggles in the hot Bahrain conditions, similar to their performance in Australia and Japan, raise concerns for their race prospects. Verstappen faces an uphill battle to challenge McLaren, while Norris aims for a podium finish. The race promises intense competition as McLaren looks to capitalize on its qualifying success. The championship battle remains tight, with Verstappen still within striking distance of Norris, though Piastri sits further back in third.
