Sun Apr 13 06:00:35 UTC 2025: ## Beijing Battered by Devastating Sandstorms, Hundreds of Flights Cancelled

**Beijing, China –** A powerful sandstorm swept across northern China on Saturday, April 12, 2025, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights in Beijing and causing widespread disruption. The storm, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 148 kph (92 mph) – some of the strongest in over 75 years – resulted in the closure of Beijing’s two major international airports, Beijing Capital and Daxing, with 693 flights cancelled by 2:00 p.m. Further cancellations of flights and train services were reported across the country.

The intense winds caused significant damage in Beijing, felling hundreds of trees, crushing cars, and damaging older buildings. Popular attractions, including Universal Studios, the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven, were closed, along with the suspension of outdoor events such as football matches. Public parks were also shut down due to safety concerns.

China has a long history of battling sandstorms originating in the country’s arid north, particularly the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts. Beijing, situated on the edge of this region, is particularly vulnerable, with storms often reducing visibility to near zero and causing significant discomfort and property damage. While the country has invested in decades-long efforts to mitigate the impact of these storms, Saturday’s event highlights the ongoing challenge posed by these extreme weather events.
