**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, April 5, 2025** – An exhibition at the 24th Congress of the CPI(M) in Madurai highlights the lives of pioneering women communist leaders in Tamil Nadu, with a focus on two figures whose stories are immortalized in recently published novels.
The exhibition features Manalur Maniammal and Pa. Visalam, both influential figures in the communist movement. Maniammal’s life is detailed in *Pathaiyil Pathintha Adikal*, a biographical novel by Sahitya Akademi award winner Rajam Krishnan. The book portrays Maniammal’s struggles as a peasant leader, highlighting her unwavering dedication and influence, even to the point of being revered as a deity by local villagers. Krishnan recounts an anecdote where Maniammal, armed with a sickle, confronted a man who had assaulted a fellow villager, showcasing her fierce determination.
Visalam, the first woman communist from Kanniyakumari, shares her experiences in the autobiographical novel, *Mella Kanavai Pazhakathaiyai*. Her story includes her marriage to fellow communist Raju and her continued involvement with the CPI (as opposed to the CPI(M)).
Both novels, while celebrating the contributions of these women, also offer a critical perspective on the communist movement itself. The exhibition serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of these women and their significant roles in shaping the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
