**Kolkata, April 4, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the cancellation of nearly 26,000 teacher and staff appointments in the state. The court’s ruling, which followed a Calcutta High Court order, cited intentional cover-ups and illegalities in the recruitment process by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar asserted that Ms. Banerjee’s actions mirror those of former Haryana Chief Minister O.P. Chautala, who was imprisoned for teacher recruitment irregularities, and predicted her imprisonment as well. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra echoed these sentiments, stating that Ms. Banerjee should resign immediately and will face legal consequences if the BJP wins the next state election.
While acknowledging that approximately 20,000 of the appointees may have been genuinely selected, the BJP maintains that the remaining positions were filled through a scam orchestrated by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Mr. Patra demanded that the government compensate the genuinely selected candidates, now unemployed, through either party funds or the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He further called for Ms. Banerjee to be charged with contempt of court for stating she cannot accept the judgment on humanitarian grounds.
The Supreme Court’s judgment strongly criticized the WBSSC for concealing irregularities in the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staff in state-run and state-aided schools. Mr. Majumdar called for the entire state cabinet to be held accountable, alleging they shielded corrupt individuals while jeopardizing the futures of genuine candidates. He also criticized the state government’s refusal to cooperate with the Calcutta High Court’s suggestion to identify candidates appointed through corrupt means, a refusal which resulted in the termination of all appointments. The future of the approximately 24,000 affected teachers remains uncertain.
