Fri Apr 04 16:16:09 UTC 2025: ## Srinagar’s Jama Masjid Closed After Controversial Waqf Bill Passes
**Srinagar, April 4, 2025** – Authorities in Srinagar closed the central Jama Masjid on Friday, preventing congregational prayers following the passage of the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The closure has sparked outrage among Muslim leaders and communities in Kashmir.
Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Umar Farooq, who was barred from performing his religious duties for a second consecutive Friday, expressed deep concern over the bill’s implications for Muslims in India on social media. He voiced fears that the bill could lead to restrictions on access to mosques and burial grounds.
The Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, the mosque’s caretaker body, condemned the authorities’ actions, describing them as “undemocratic and hostile.” The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a conglomerate of religious bodies, also strongly criticized the bill and plans a meeting on April 7th to discuss a collective response with national Muslim organizations like the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).
National Conference MPs Aga Syed Ruhullah and Mehdi expressed their opposition to the bill, alleging that their voices were suppressed in Parliament. Mr. Mehdi described the bill as “state-sponsored dispossession” and criticized provisions that remove Waqf autonomy and abolish “Waqf by user,” fearing it will lead to the seizure of Muslim properties. He vowed to continue opposing what he called a “belligerent and bigoted attack on Muslims.” The MPs further claimed that the ruling BJP pushed the bill through without considering minority concerns. The closure of the Jama Masjid follows protests and demonstrations over the bill’s passage. The situation remains tense as the Muslim community in Kashmir grapples with the implications of this legislation.
