BELAGAVI, KARNATAKA – A man and a woman have been arrested in Belagavi, Karnataka, for allegedly killing their newborn infant and disposing of the body in a roadside bush. Mahabaleshwar Kaloji, 31, and Simran Maulasab, 22, were apprehended on March 24th following the discovery of the baby’s body in Ambadgatti village near Kittur on March 23rd.

Police say Kaloji, after the premature birth of the child out of wedlock, placed the baby in a plastic bag which was discarded in the bush. Investigators believe the bag fell on a rock, causing a fatal head injury. The couple, who were in a relationship facing opposition from their families due to their inter-faith background, admitted to the act. They reportedly did not seek medical attention during the pregnancy.

The accused have been charged with murder and concealing the birth of a child under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Charges include Section 94 (concealing birth), Section 103 (murder), Section 238 (destruction of evidence), and BNS 3(5) (joint criminal liability). The investigation is ongoing at the Kittur police station.
