**Ranchi, March 24, 2025** – The Jharkhand government will conduct a caste-based survey in the next fiscal year, Transport Minister Deepak Birua announced in the state Assembly on Monday. The survey, first approved in February 2024, aims to determine the state’s population by caste.
The Personnel department has been designated as the nodal agency and issued a notice on March 4th to hire an agency to assess the logistical and financial requirements of the project. While Minister Birua acknowledged delays due to the procurement process, he assured the Assembly that the government remains committed to completing the survey, modeled after similar exercises in Telangana and Bihar.
Congress MLA Pradip Yadav, who raised the question regarding the survey’s timeline, also urged the government to include a Sarna religious code in the survey to accurately account for the Sarna population. Minister Birua acknowledged the request but provided no further details.
