Mon Mar 24 05:57:36 UTC 2025: ## Comedian’s Remarks Spark Violence and Political Firestorm in Maharashtra

**Mumbai, March 24, 2025** – Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s latest video, allegedly containing defamatory remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has ignited a political firestorm and sparked widespread controversy. The incident resulted in violence, arrests, and a heated debate over freedom of speech.

Following a complaint by a Shiv Sena MLA, an FIR was registered against Kamra on Monday. However, the controversy escalated when Shiv Sena (Shinde group) workers vandalized the Mumbai hotel where Kamra’s video was filmed. Police arrested Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others for the vandalism. Kanal defended the actions, claiming it was a matter of “self-respect.”

The incident has deeply divided Maharashtra’s political landscape. Opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), condemned the vandalism as a “cowardly” act. The ruling BJP, however, questioned the timing of Kamra’s remarks. The complainant MLA issued a two-day ultimatum to Kamra, threatening further police action if an apology isn’t forthcoming.

The controversy extended beyond the vandalism. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam alleged that the booking for Kamra’s show was funded by Matoshree, the residence of former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, implying a political motive behind the comedian’s remarks. Nirupam further accused Kamra of being linked to the opposition Congress and Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of Shiv Sena, showcasing a photograph of Kamra with Sanjay Raut.

Conversely, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticized the “gunda raj” (hooliganism) in the state and demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recover damages from the vandals, referencing similar actions taken after violence in Nagpur. Raut also called for the transfer of the Mumbai police commissioner.

The Habitat Studio, the venue of the show, announced its closure following the incident, expressing shock and distress over the vandalism. They clarified that artists are solely responsible for their content.

Adding to the complexity, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant defended Kamra’s remarks, stating they were accurate and calling for an FIR against the vandals. He drew parallels to Balasaheb Thackeray’s satirical cartoons.

Maharashtra Minister Pratap Baburao Sarnaik, while condemning the vandalism, alleged the venue was illegal due to previous incidents of remarks against PM Modi. He stated that action should be taken against the “illegal studio.”

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar urged all parties to remain within legal boundaries and avoid escalating the situation. Congress leader Nana Patole criticized the lack of law and order, claiming it was driving people and industries out of the state. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the violence and accused the Shinde Sena of inciting violence.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that legal action would be taken against Kamra and urged him to apologize, emphasizing that freedom of expression has limits. The incident continues to fuel debate on free speech and political tensions in Maharashtra.
