Sat Mar 22 19:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Galápagos Warblers Show Increased Aggression Due to Traffic Noise, Study Finds
**March 23, 2025** – A new study published in *The Hindu* reveals that Galápagos yellow warblers are exhibiting altered behavior due to traffic noise. Researchers observed heightened aggression in birds living near roads, even in areas with minimal vehicle traffic.
The study, conducted on Floreana and Santa Cruz islands, involved playing bird songs simulating an intruder, both with and without recorded traffic noise, at various locations. Birds near roads (within 50 meters) showed significantly increased aggressive responses to the simulated intruder when traffic noise was present. Conversely, warblers living further from roads displayed *decreased* aggression under the same conditions.
Surprisingly, the effect was observed even on Floreana Island, where only about 10 vehicles are present, highlighting the sensitivity of these birds to even low levels of traffic noise. The findings suggest that even minimal exposure to traffic noise can significantly impact the behavior of Galápagos yellow warblers, leading to increased aggression in birds inhabiting roadside territories.
