Sat Mar 22 19:33:17 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Assembly Speaker Nominates MLAs to MCD, Giving BJP Potential Edge in Upcoming Polls

**New Delhi, March 23, 2025** – Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has nominated 14 MLAs to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), a move that could significantly impact the upcoming mayoral elections. The nominees include 11 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and three from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

These MLAs will have voting rights in the MCD polls for Mayor and Deputy Mayor, potentially giving the BJP an advantage. Currently, both the BJP and AAP claim to have 115 councillors each in the 238-member House, following defections and the February 5th Assembly elections. The Speaker stated that the nominations are in accordance with the Municipal Corporation Act of 1957 and that the MLAs will play a crucial role in improving civic services.

Their responsibilities will include assisting in budget formulation, civic administration, and urban governance, bridging the gap between the Delhi Legislative Assembly and the MCD. The Speaker emphasized their contribution to enhancing municipal services and addressing issues such as waste management and pollution control. The BJP, having secured 104 wards in the 2022 MCD elections, maintains that AAP no longer holds a majority. The absence of an anti-defection law within the MCD further complicates the political landscape.
