**Chennai, India** – A coalition of opposition parties, spearheaded by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has vehemently criticized the lack of transparency and consultation in the upcoming delimitation exercise proposed by the Union government. In a meeting held today in Chennai, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) passed a seven-point resolution demanding a more inclusive and transparent process.
The resolution calls for the inclusion of all state governments, political parties, and stakeholders in the discussions. It specifically urges a 25-year extension of the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 census population, arguing that states which have effectively implemented population control measures should not be penalized. The JAC also demands constitutional amendments to protect these states.
The coalition, comprising representatives from several prominent parties including the DMK, Congress, AAP, and BJD, plans to submit a joint representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the current parliamentary session. State-level legislative resolutions will also be pursued to reinforce their position. A coordinated public awareness campaign will further amplify their concerns.
Several key political figures attended the meeting, including Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik participated virtually. Notably, the Trinamool Congress did not attend.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who chaired the meeting, announced that the next JAC meeting will be held in Hyderabad. The coalition’s unified stance signals significant opposition to the proposed delimitation exercise, raising the stakes for the upcoming political maneuvering.
