**New Delhi, March 21, 2025** – Justice Yashwant Varma, a Delhi High Court judge, has been transferred back to his parent court in Allahabad following the discovery of unaccounted cash at his Delhi residence. The cash was found by firefighters extinguishing a blaze at his bungalow over the Holi weekend.
Justice Varma, appointed to the Delhi High Court in October 2021, previously served at the Allahabad High Court since his appointment as an Additional Judge in October 2014. He became a permanent judge there in February 2016. Before his judicial career, he practiced law in Allahabad, specializing in constitutional, labor, and corporate matters. He also served as Special Counsel and Chief Standing Counsel for the Allahabad High Court.
The incident prompted the Supreme Court Collegium to recommend his transfer, a decision sources say Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna viewed as necessary to protect the judiciary’s image. A preliminary inquiry into the matter has been ordered. Justice Varma is currently on leave and has not yet commented publicly.
The discovery has shaken the Delhi High Court. Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya acknowledged the demoralizing effect of the incident, while senior advocate Arun Bhardwaj urged administrative steps to prevent future occurrences. Prominent lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has called for greater transparency in the judicial appointment process, citing concerns about corruption within the judiciary. Sibal’s statement highlighted the seriousness of the issue and urged for a more rigorous vetting process for judicial appointments.
