**PALAKKAD, March 19, 2025** – The Palakkad Railway Division has announced a significant 36.5% surge in freight revenue for the 2024-25 fiscal year, exceeding ₹583.37 crore. This substantial increase is attributed to a remarkable rise in freight loading, reaching 6.41 million tonnes by March 18th. The previous fiscal year saw freight earnings of ₹427.64 crore from 5.90 million tonnes.

Divisional Railway Manager A.K. Chaturvedi described the growth as “phenomenal,” the highest in recent years. He highlighted the division’s crucial role in transporting essential goods across North Kerala, Dakshina Kannada, and Tamil Nadu, serving as a lifeline for industries, agriculture, and infrastructure development in the region.

Coal and fertilizers constituted 95% of the transported freight. A new revenue stream has been added with the transportation of laterite stones from Ullal, generating ₹37.5 lakh per rake. The increased movement of commodities like coal, fertilizers, cement, and petroleum products is credited with boosting the regional economy.

Mr. Chaturvedi emphasized the division’s dedication to providing cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally sustainable freight transportation, underlining the railway’s vital role in supporting industrial growth and infrastructure development across Southern India. Improvements to worker conditions, including dedicated restrooms at Ullal station, are also underway.
