Wed Mar 19 04:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore Return to Earth After 9-Month Mission

**Cape Canaveral, FL** – Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore safely returned to Earth on Wednesday after a nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Initially planned for only eight days, technical issues extended their stay to 286 days, during which they orbited Earth 4,576 times, covering 195 million kilometers. Their 17-hour return journey concluded with a successful splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida at 3:27 AM IST on March 19th.

Williams, who commanded the ISS for three months during the mission, and Wilmore are currently undergoing medical evaluations following their extended time in space. President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, explained the delay in their White House visit, stating that the lack of gravity in space affects muscles, requiring a period of recovery before they are fully fit for such an engagement. He emphasized that the astronauts will visit the White House once they have fully recovered.

The successful mission was a collaborative effort between NASA, SpaceX, and Elon Musk. The extended mission highlights the increasing reliance on private companies like SpaceX for crewed spaceflights. NASA has contracted both SpaceX and Boeing to transport astronauts to the ISS, with plans to decommission the ISS by 2030, allowing NASA to focus on lunar and Martian missions. The decommissioned ISS will be deorbited and destroyed in a controlled manner. Private companies are expected to build and operate the next generation of space stations.
