**SHIVAMOGGA, March 16, 2025** – Hassan Lok Sabha MP Shreyas M. Patel has pledged to prevent the closure of Hassan University, assuring constituents he will lobby the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to retain the institution. This follows a recent recommendation by a Cabinet sub-committee to shut down nine universities, including Hassan University, which was established in 2023.

While the government maintains no final decision has been made, concerns remain that the university might be merged with Mysuru University. The announcement sparked a round-table meeting of progressive groups in Hassan, where participants voiced strong opposition to the potential closure.

JD(S) MLA A. Manju expressed concern over the delay in addressing the issue, while Kannada Sahitya Parishat district president H.L. Mallesh Gowda highlighted the importance of strengthening state universities to ensure accessibility for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Participants resolved to intensify protests and pressure the state government to maintain Hassan University. The meeting was attended by representatives from various organizations and political parties.
