**NEW DELHI, March 16, 2025** – Indian Railways has clarified the rules regarding the use of middle berths in sleeper coaches, specifying usage times to ensure fair access for all passengers. Passengers assigned to middle berths are permitted to keep their berths down for sleeping only between 10 PM and 6 AM. After 6 AM, and before 10 PM, the middle berth must be folded up to provide seating space for lower berth passengers.
This measure aims to optimize limited seating space in sleeper coaches. While the middle berth is primarily for sleeping at night, during the day it should be folded to allow lower berth occupants more comfortable seating. Passengers are encouraged to cooperate and comply with this rule. Failure to comply may be reported to railway staff or ticket examiners.
