**UDHAGAMANDALAM, Tamil Nadu, March 14, 2025** – A 50-year-old woman, G. Anjalai, was killed and partially consumed by a suspected leopard near Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris district on Wednesday evening. Her body was discovered Thursday morning by local residents.
The Forest Department has launched an investigation, deploying camera traps and collecting evidence such as pug marks and hair samples. While the camera traps yielded no images of the animal, forensic analysis of the hair samples is underway to confirm the species.
Divisional Forest Officer S. Gowtham stated that preliminary evidence, along with recent leopard sightings in the area, points to a leopard as the likely culprit. He emphasized that this appears to be an isolated incident, with no other recent reports of human-wildlife conflict in the vicinity.
The Forest Department is continuing its search for the animal and urging residents to avoid venturing into heavily forested areas, especially during evenings. They are monitoring the situation closely.
