**Thiruvananthapuram, March 12, 2025** – Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was allegedly illegally detained by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists in Neyyattinkara, Kerala, on Wednesday evening. The incident sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from across the political spectrum.

Mr. Gandhi was in Kerala to participate in events commemorating the 100th anniversary of a historic meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and Sree Narayana Guru at the Sivagiri Madhom. During a speech at the Madhom, he reportedly referred to the RSS as “a cancer on the nation’s soul.”

Later, after unveiling a statue in Neyyattinkara, RSS activists surrounded Mr. Gandhi’s vehicle, demanding he retract his statement. He refused, reportedly shouting “RSS murdabad and Gandhiji zindabad,” before leaving the scene. Police reported receiving no reports of the incident.

The Sivagiri Madhom said it would issue a statement on Thursday. Political leaders strongly condemned the actions. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan called the incident “shameful,” while CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam highlighted the RSS’s alleged disregard for Mahatma Gandhi and the independence movement. Former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V.M. Sudheeran also criticized the incident. The lack of police presence at the scene has also drawn criticism.
