Tue Mar 11 15:48:28 UTC 2025: ## Coimbatore Conservancy Workers Still Await Promised Housing Five Years After Displacement

**Coimbatore, March 11, 2025** – Conservancy workers displaced from CMC Colony in Coimbatore five years ago are still awaiting promised housing, despite the completion of 222 tenements built for them. The families, numbering around 500, were relocated in 2019 with assurances of new homes within two years on land near the Ukkadam fish market. While the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) completed the ₹25 crore housing project a year ago, delays in relocating the fish market have left the workers in inadequate temporary shelters.

Residents report deplorable living conditions in the temporary settlement, citing insufficient and unsanitary toilet facilities, metal roofing that makes summers unbearable, and frequent flooding. They have repeatedly petitioned the district administration and civic body for the allocation of the completed housing units.

A TNUHDB official stated that a proposal for an additional 298 houses is pending government approval. Once funding is secured, tenders will be issued. The existing 222 tenements are expected to be allocated within a month via a lottery system overseen by the district administration. Until then, the displaced families remain in substandard temporary housing, highlighting ongoing challenges in resettlement projects.
