Sun Mar 09 11:00:00 UTC 2025: **Tropical Storm Alfred Wreaks Havoc Across Eastern Australia, Leaving One Dead and Dozens Injured**

BRISBANE, Australia – The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Alfred have lashed Australia’s eastern coast, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least one life. The storm, which made landfall near Brisbane on Saturday evening, has caused widespread flooding, power outages, and significant damage.

A 61-year-old man died after being swept away by floodwaters in Dorrigo, New South Wales (NSW), on Friday. Police confirmed the discovery of a body believed to be his on Saturday. Separately, 13 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel were injured when two military trucks collided during rescue operations in Lismore, NSW. Initial reports indicated around 36 personnel were involved, but Defence Minister Matt Keogh clarified the injury count. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the injured soldiers as “heroes” assisting those in need.

Over 300,000 properties remain without power across south-east Queensland and NSW, with Energex reporting around 287,000 outages in south-east Queensland and Essential Energy reporting over 42,600 in NSW. High winds have brought down trees and power lines, causing significant road closures and damage. Thousands have been forced to evacuate, and nearly 1,000 schools have closed. Public transport and airports remain disrupted.

Despite being downgraded to a tropical low, the storm continues to pose a significant threat. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, warning that flooding is expected to continue for several days. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns emphasized the ongoing danger, regardless of the storm’s downgraded status. Emergency services are working to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected. The clean-up operation is expected to take several days.
