**Cape Canaveral, FL** – SpaceX is poised to launch its massive Starship rocket tonight, March 6th, at 6:30 p.m. ET. The launch, originally scheduled for March 3rd, was delayed due to technical issues discovered during pre-launch checks. This will be the eighth test flight of the fully reusable Starship system, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built.
The launch will take place from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas. SpaceX will provide live coverage approximately 40 minutes prior to liftoff, which can be viewed on Space.com or directly via SpaceX’s channels.
This ambitious test flight aims to achieve several key objectives. The Super Heavy booster is expected to return to Starbase and be captured by the launch tower’s arms roughly seven minutes after launch. The Starship upper stage will then deploy four dummy Starlink satellites on a suborbital trajectory before splashing down in the Indian Ocean near Western Australia approximately 66 minutes after launch.
This flight follows the January 16th launch of Starship Flight 7, which successfully saw the Super Heavy booster caught but resulted in the upper stage exploding over the Atlantic Ocean due to a propellant leak before satellite deployment.
Starship’s development is crucial for SpaceX’s long-term goals, including lunar and Martian colonization and broader launch capabilities. NASA is also heavily invested, having selected Starship as the lunar lander for its Artemis program. Future iterations of Starship are planned to be even larger than the current 403.5-foot tall vehicle.
