**KOCHI, March 6, 2025** – Three teachers at a government high school in Thengode, near Kakkanad, Kochi, have been suspended following an alleged case of ragging. The action comes after a Class X student’s mother filed a police complaint alleging the teachers’ negligence in addressing the incident.
According to the complaint, several students threw an itching powder, identified as velvet bean powder, on her daughter on February 3rd. The mother reported the incident to the police on February 17th, stating the teachers failed to take appropriate action despite her concerns. The girl suffered severe physical and mental distress, requiring medical treatment.
The Infopark Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) on March 2nd against five students under the Juvenile Justice Act and two teachers under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The incident gained public attention after the mother shared her daughter’s ordeal with a television news channel.
The school authorities initially claimed the incident was accidental, but the Department of General Education initiated an inquiry, leading to the suspension of three teachers and the transfer of another. The involved students and the victim are currently taking the SSLC examination. The Kerala Higher Education Minister has pledged to implement a state-level anti-ragging system.
