**Shangla, Pakistan –** Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai made a poignant return to her hometown in Shangla, Pakistan, on Wednesday, her first visit since a Taliban attack in 2012. Accompanied by her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, and husband, Aseer Malik, she flew by helicopter to Barkana to visit family and her eponymous school.
Ms. Yousafzai visited her uncle, who recently underwent heart surgery, and paid her respects at the ancestral graveyard. She spent time at the Malala Fund-supported school and college she established in 2018, which provides free education to approximately 1,000 girls. The SHO of Karora Station, Amjad Alam Khan, reported that Ms. Yousafzai interacted with students, encouraging them to pursue their education. She also visited her maternal family’s home. Education activist Shahzad Roy, who runs the Shangla Girls School and College, briefed her on the facilities.
This marks Ms. Yousafzai’s first return to her hometown since the Taliban attack, although she has visited Pakistan on several occasions since then, including visits in 2018, 2022 (to aid flood victims), and earlier this year for an education conference. She returned to Islamabad following her visit.
