Tue Mar 04 20:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Canada Retaliates Against US Tariffs in Full-Blown Trade War

**OTTAWA** – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has launched a full-scale retaliatory response to the United States’ imposition of sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods, calling the move a “trade war” that will ultimately harm American families. Speaking from Parliament Hill Tuesday, Trudeau announced Canada will immediately implement 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of US goods, with an additional $125 billion in tariffs to follow within 21 days, bringing the total to $155 billion.

Trudeau sharply criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision, referring to the tariffs as “very dumb” and questioning the logic of imposing them on a close ally while cooperating with Russia. He directly addressed the American public, warning that the tariffs will fuel inflation and cost American jobs, particularly in sectors reliant on Canadian materials and consumers. He urged Trump to reconsider the decision and work collaboratively to ensure North American prosperity.

The Canadian government will also challenge the US tariffs at the World Trade Organization, claiming they violate existing trade agreements. Domestically, Trudeau announced support measures for Canadian businesses and workers affected by the trade war, including job loss assistance and financial aid.

Trudeau dismissed Trump’s claims that Canada is not adequately addressing the fentanyl crisis as “totally false,” and vehemently rejected suggestions that the US aims to economically cripple Canada to facilitate annexation. “They have chosen to sabotage their agenda,” Trudeau stated. “There is absolutely no justification or need for these tariffs today.”

Despite facing an upcoming leadership change within his Liberal Party on Sunday, Trudeau vowed a robust defense of Canada’s interests: “We are Canadians,” he declared. “We are going to fight, and we are going to win.”
