Wed Mar 05 14:28:29 UTC 2025: ## Maharashtra Assembly Suspends Samajwadi Party MLA, Sparks Political Row

**Mumbai, India –** The Maharashtra Assembly suspended Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi for the remainder of the budget session on Wednesday following controversial remarks he made about Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Azmi’s comments, which claimed Aurangzeb was not a cruel ruler and built many temples, sparked outrage and led to a proposal for his suspension. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil stated that Azmi’s remarks were disrespectful to the Assembly. Azmi later attempted to retract his statement and apologized if any sentiments were hurt, claiming his words were misrepresented.

The suspension has ignited a political firestorm. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray criticized Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for supporting Azmi, challenging Yadav to defend Azmi in Uttar Pradesh if he so chose.

Yadav, in turn, condemned the suspension on X (formerly Twitter), arguing that it stifled free speech and was ideologically motivated. He questioned the basis for the suspension, stating that punitive measures should not curtail free thought. He emphasized the importance of fearless expression among his party members.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding historical figures and interpretations of their legacies in Indian politics.
