**NEW DELHI** – The Supreme Court of India today allowed YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, known as “The BeerBiceps Guy,” to resume his podcast, “The Ranveer Show,” after he was temporarily restrained following a controversy over a crass remark made on a roast show. While lifting the restriction, the court emphasized the need to balance freedom of expression with societal morality.
Allahbadia’s controversial comment, made during an appearance on “India’s Got Latent,” sparked widespread outrage and numerous police complaints. He subsequently apologized, stating the remark was inappropriate and not intended as humor.
The court, however, stipulated that Allahbadia must provide an undertaking to maintain higher standards of morality in his future content, ensuring it is suitable for viewers of all ages. The judges highlighted that using “filthy language” does not constitute talent, advocating for a standard where entire families can enjoy such content.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, argued that while Allahbadia’s remarks weren’t merely vulgar, they were “perverse.” He suggested the need for guidelines for digital content.
The Supreme Court agreed, stating that while a regulatory regime shouldn’t impede free speech, it also can’t be a “free-for-all platform.” The court directed the Solicitor General to draft regulatory measures that balance freedom of expression with the need to maintain morality. These measures must be put in the public domain for feedback from all stakeholders – including legal professionals and the public – before any legislative action is taken. The court underscored the constitutional provision for reasonable restrictions on free speech in the interest of public order and morality.
