**Mulhouse, France** – A 37-year-old suspect, identified as being on a terror prevention watchlist, carried out a knife attack in Mulhouse, eastern France, on Saturday, resulting in one death and the serious injury of two police officers. President Emmanuel Macron swiftly declared the attack an Islamist terrorist act.
The attack, which occurred shortly before 4:00 pm local time during a demonstration, saw the suspect targeting municipal police officers while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” according to witnesses and the national anti-terror prosecutors unit (PNAT). A 69-year-old Portuguese civilian who intervened was fatally stabbed. Three other officers sustained minor injuries.
The suspect, born in Algeria and reportedly under judicial supervision, house arrest, and an expulsion order from France, was apprehended at the scene. One seriously injured officer suffered a carotid artery injury, while the other sustained a wound to the thorax. Military units provided backup, and a security perimeter was established as forensic investigators collected evidence.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to visit the site. The PNAT is investigating charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Mayor Michele Lutz expressed horror at the event, while President Macron offered the nation’s condolences to the victim’s family and reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou declared the nation is in mourning.
